What’s in Your Pantry?

Do you have a pantry, or cabinets you use to store your dry goods and non-perishables? It may seem like a personal question, but…What’s in your pantry?

Having the basic essentials on hand can make meal planning, spontaneous cookie making, even gift giving a lot easier. The thing is, each of us has preferences, and my essentials might not be yours. Below is a list of the basic Pantry essentials, plus I’ve added a list for the fridge and freezer.

THE PANTRY
Baking Goods~

  • CEREAL~a must have!
  • all purpose flour
  • cake flour
  • granulated (white) sugar
  • brown sugar
  • confectioner’s (powdered) sugar
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • cornstarch
  • cream of tartar
  • yeast
  • salt
  • unsweetened cocoa powder
  • biscuit mix (see recipe)
  • dried breadcrumbs
  • cornmeal
  • baking chips: chocolate,
    peanutbutter, butterscotch
  • unsweetened chocolate
  • shortening or lard
  • reg. or quick oatmeal
  • crackers
  • honey
  • powdered milk
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • evaporated milk

Canned Goods~

  • tomatoes~whole, chopped, crushed
    puree, paste and/or sauce
  • beans~kidney, green, yellow
  • corn~whole kernels, creamed style
  • fruit~cocktail, cherries,
    peaches, pineapple
  • pie filling
  • broth or buollion
  • soup~condensed, cream of chicken
    mushroom, celery, tomato
  • meats~tuna, chicken, crab, anchovies
  • AND any of your own family’s essentials
THE FRIDGE
Dairy Products~

  • milk-your choice
  • margarine, butter
  • eggs-okay, not really dairy
  • sour cream
  • yogurt-plain or flavored
  • heavy cream
  • Cheeses
  • cheddar~mild, or sharp
  • swiss
  • mozzarella
  • parmesan
  • specialty/gourmet cheese
  • cream cheese

Condiments & Sauces~

  • ketchup
  • mayonaise
  • mustard-yellow, honey, spiced
  • pickle relishes
  • jam or jelly
  • pickles
  • soy sauce
  • steak sauce
  • horseradish
  • teriyaki sauce
  • worcestershire sauce

THE FREEZER

  • icecream-gotta have it!
  • sherbet or frozen yogurt
  • frozen berries, peaches
  • frozen veggies-for soups and meals
  • icecubes
  • phyllo and pastry doughs
  • Frozen Meats
  • chicken breasts-boneless, skinless
  • chicken~whole or cut-up parts
  • ground meats~beef, turkey, pork
  • whipped topping

Obviously, it would cost a small fortune to buy everything you need. Here are some tips:

  • Stock up during the sales.
  • Rotate your stock with oldest items up front.
  • Add something new to your inventory with each shopping trip.

Soon you will have a well-stocked, and fully functioning pantry.
