Finding More Me Time

It’s important to have time for you. Moms are the ones who never seem to have enough time for the things they enjoy. Between taking care of husbands, children and the house, they barely have time to breath, let alone relax. What can you do to find a little more time for yourself? You might not be able to take a week’s vacation, but even a few minutes here and there can make a big difference.

Mothers’ Day Out

There are many childcare centers, some in churches, that provide a Mothers’ Day Out program. These programs do not require that your child be registered for daily care. You can use the program a day here and there as needed. The time could be used for shopping, doctor appointments, or even just going home and pampering yourself. The prices on these programs vary, but it could be worth it to just get an hour or two free.

Play Dates

Depending on the age of your children and their friends, you might be able to arrange play dates for your children. By trading off the play date location, both the friend’s mom and you get a break. If it works out well, and more families are willing, you could include another family or two, gaining more free time for all the moms involved.

Tea Time

Taking even a short break during the day can be enough to recharge your batteries. Find a way to keep the kids entertained for a few minutes. It just has to be long enough to sit down and have a cup of your favorite tea, coffee or hot chocolate. The kids could have a snack, or a small craft project (that’s easy to clean up you don’t want to cause extra work). Sit where you can still see the kids, and just relax. If the children are too small to be left alone, put them down for a nap, or wait until they are in bed for the evening.

Date with Dad

It’s important for the kids to spend some quality time with dad. Why not suggest he take them out for a mini-date, while you stay home and relax. Have dinner as a family, and then they can go for dessert at the local ice cream shop. Or go to a fast food place that has an indoor playground. They can get a treat, and the kids can play for a while, and you get some peace and quiet.

Mothers’ Helper

Sometimes it’s nice to just have another pair of eyes and hands around the house. Many young girls take babysitting courses, but still need experience taking care of young children. If you can hire a mother’s helper for an hour or two a week, not only do you get a break, but they also get the needed experience. It is very helpful, especially if you have young children and aren’t comfortable leaving them with a sitter yet. You can still be close by, but you don’t have to be in the same room. This also makes a better transition when you are ready to leave your children with a sitter.

There are always ways to find time for yourself. It’s a matter of using the resources around you and putting your sanity at the top of the list. When you take care of yourself you’re better equipped to take on the family and all that life entails.

Scheduled Site Maintenance

I wanted to make some sort of official announcement to let you all know that I will be moving my website over to a different hosting account within the next day or so. Therefore, if you happen to stop by and can’t find the site – not to worry it will be back up in all it’s glory within a couple of hours!

Stay tuned…

So, over the next couple of days, don’t panic if things look a little wonky around here. I’ll have them up and running and back in order before you know it.

Thanks for your patience in advance. ;)

How To Properly Clean and Organize Your Messy Refrigerator

by Shelly Hill

One of the appliances that gets the most use in your home happens to be the refrigerator. Every day our family members get in and out of the refrigerator to grab what they need and off they go. Rarely do they take the time out to clean up any messes that occur. As the week goes on, these refrigerator messes get out of control pretty quickly.

If this sounds like your refrigerator you are not alone! Personally, I used to dislike cleaning out my refrigerator because it was so time consuming. Over the years I have learned a few tricks on how to clean it properly and how to organize my items to help prevent accidental messes.

The first thing that you want to do is to remove everything from inside your refrigerator. Fill up your sink with warm soapy water and grab a new clean sponge. Take your shelves and racks over to the sink and scrub them down with the soapy water. When you are finished scrubbing them, rinse clean with cool water and towel dry. Fill up a bucket with warm soapy water and take it over to the refrigerator so that you can wipe down the inside walls, drawers, shelves and doors that are not removable. Rinse with clean water and towel dry.

Before you place everything back inside your refrigerator, check all of the expiration dates. Anything that has expired gets immediately tossed. Use a clean damp sponge to clean any gook off of your condiment bottles and containers before placing them back inside.

If organization is a problem for you, I suggest you invest in some clear containers that are stackable. I purchased 1 cup, 2 cup, 3 cup, 4 cup and 8 cup containers that are specifically made for the refrigerator and they stack on top of each other to save on space. I went with clear ones so that we can easily see the inside contents without having to label them. I also purchased slim oval shaped plastic beverage containers that take up less space than round ones and use those for all of our beverages. I decided to go with clear and opaque beverage containers so we can easily see the inside contents. Finally, I purchased some really neat slim design condiment containers at our local kitchen supply store. These containers are fantastic for holding all of your messy condiments and I find they fit inside my refrigerator door a lot easier than the regular containers that condiments come in.

Keeping your refrigerator clean and organized doesn’t have to be a nightmare. I suggest giving it a good overall cleaning once a month and to invest in some great slim design containers that are specifically made for refrigerator use. When you notice spills and drips, clean them up right away instead of letting them accumulate for another day.

Organizing Tip: Donate

When the time comes to clean out and reorganize the house, there are always items you find that you just don’t use anymore. Some things may even be gifts that you have never even taken out of the original package. As long as the items are still in good shape, there are many ways they can find a new home. Many people do not want to bother with a yard sale, so they prefer to donate the items to a charity.

Many items can be donated to area thrift or Salvation Army stores. Quite often they will give you a receipt that will allow you to take it as a tax write-off. It is probably best to call and check with them as to their drop-off policies. Some places only take donations on certain days or hours.

Another option is to donate carefully used toys, books and clothes to women’s shelters. Many times the families staying there have had to leave their homes with just what they were wearing. A few things for them to have while they are there can be a great comfort.

There are other charities that also take clothes and household goods. Some, including veterans’ organizations like Purple Heart and Vietnam Vets, and other groups like Easter Seals, will actually pick up your donations at your home. If you call them, they have set pickup schedules for the neighborhoods in your area. They have a set procedure.

Some hospitals collect books, sometimes specifically for the children’s wing. When your children outgrow their books, considering giving them away to a hospital or other charities for children.

Once you’ve donated things, you can reorganize what you have left and maximize your storage space. This is something to consider doing every few months, because things tend to accumulate. If you’re unsure about donating some things, put them away, and if you haven’t used them after a given time then you can probably go ahead and donate them.

Trusted Home Remedies For Bug Bites and Insect Stings

By Shelly Hill

When it comes to getting an insect bite, most of them can be safely treated at home.

If you are allergic to bites and/or stings, you should seek professional medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include, but are not limited to the following: shortness of breath, wheezing, tightness in the chest, chest pain, dizziness and/or difficulty swallowing, talking or breathing,

You should seek medical attention if any signs of infection are present, such as pus, oozing fluids, redness or the area is warm or hot to the touch.

If swelling is involved, try using cool compresses or ice packs. After the first 24 hours, you can try warm compresses to help alleviate the swelling.

If you are not allergic to bites, you can try one of these home remedies to help relieve the itching and pain.

Homemade Paste Remedies:

You can try making a paste by adding one of the below items with just a little bit of water. Dab the paste onto the bite and let it dry.

baking soda
meat tenderizer (containing the ingredient Papain)
mud
table salt
antacid tablet (like Tums)

Non-Paste Remedies:

If using a homemade paste isn’t your cup of tea, you can try one of these following ideas. Just dab or roll it directly onto the affected area.

underarm deodorant
mouthwash with alcohol
tooth paste (not gel or whiteners)
honey

OTC (Over The Counter) Remedies:

Preparation H
Hydrocortisone Cream
Liquid Benadryl (dab directly onto the area)
Benadryl Anti-Itch Cream
Nupercainal Cream
Calamine Lotion

Prevention Tips:

To help prevent getting bitten, you can try an insect repellent.

If you are looking for a more natural way of repelling them, try incorporating a lot of raw onions or cooked garlic into your daily diet. When going outdoors, avoid wearing brightly colored clothing or smelly perfumes and scented hair products. All of these things attract the insects to you.

7 Expert Dog Training Tips

Whether you have a new puppy or an old dog, it makes good sense to invest a little time training them. And while there is an abundance of information available about how to train your dog, you can’t go wrong with these expert dog training tips.

1. Positive reinforcement is essential. While there are many theories on how to train your dog, most dog training experts agree that positive reinforcement works best. Positive reinforcement involves rewarding your dog with verbal praise “good dog”, physical praise like a pat on the head and food rewards. It doesn’t involve yelling at your dog, hitting or punishing them.

2. Consistency is essential. If you’re working with your dog on a specific skill or trick then try to train them at the same time every day. This helps your dog know what to expect. Most dogs thrive on structure and will perform and learn much faster when they know what’s expected. If you’re training using food rewards, try to train your dog before mealtime so they’re a little bit hungry and motivated.

3. Be patient. Dogs tend to learn in waves. Sometimes they pick things up quickly and then the next day it seems like you have to start over from the very beginning. Be patient. Start each new trick with very small steps and be clear about what you expect. Even with the smallest tricks like “sit” you will want to break it down into smaller steps.

4. Use hand cues in addition to verbal cues. Some dogs have an easier time understanding and remembering hand signals than they do with verbal cues. Assign a hand signal to each trick or behavior you are training.

5. Train in small increments. Dogs have short attention spans. Trying to train them for twenty or thirty minutes isn’t going to work. They’re going to get frustrated and lose focus. Instead, keep training sessions to no more than five minutes.

6. Always end on a positive note. Learning a new trick is hard work. End each training session, no matter how frustrating, on a positive note. Always give your dog a trick or behavior to perform that they know how to perform and end with a food reward and plenty of praise.

7. Keep your dog healthy. Finally, one of the most important dog training tips from the experts recommends feeding your dog a quality dog food, giving them plenty of fresh water and making sure they get enough sleep. A healthy dog is a happier dog and will learn desired behaviors much more quickly.

In the beginning, you may want to train for only a minute or two until your dog learns to look forward to training. Dogs can learn to dislike training. Keeping the training sessions short, consistent and positive not only will help you both learn to enjoy the process, but it will also build a bond of trust between you and your dog.

Time to Get Back to It

Holiday Hangover…Time to Get Back to It
Guest Post by Jen Malik

It’s easy getting into the routine of staying up later, getting up later, eating (a lot of) yummy food and hanging out with family and friends, isn’t it? But sooner than we’d hope, the reality hits. The holiday is just about over and as it stands now, there are just a couple of days before we’re back to the usual grind. Sigh.

The kids go back to school, Dad goes back to work and I’ve got to get into my usual routine. Problem is, none of us really want to. :-(

But alas, we don’t have much say in the matter.

If you’re in a similar boat, take heart…you aren’t alone. And maybe some of these tips will help.

Going Back to Work:
Take it easy in the next couple of days. If you’ve been going non-stop with visits with family and other obligations, clear your calendar now. It’s time to get some relax time in now before heading back to the ol’ grind.

Get the house back in order. Okay, this is contradictory to taking it easy, but if you’ve got a clean house, laundry done, decorations put away, you won’t be worrying about those things when you get back to work. If you’re really ambitious, make preparations for your meals over the next few days.

The night before, get your clothes, lunch, purse and keys ready. That way, when you’re a zombie in the morning, you know you’ve got all these little details taken care of. It can make a world of difference to your morning routine.

On your first day, don’t expect too much of yourself. If you’ve been away and others have been in the office, take the time to go through your email, see what happened and put together an action plan. Don’t wear yourself out by staying too late. You can get back to it tomorrow.

Going Back to School:
A few days before returning to school, get the kids back into their usual night time and morning routines. Bed times should return back to normal (probably for you too – start setting your alarm again).

Talk to the kids about school. Get them excited about seeing their friends again, taking their favorite classes and other things they like about school.

On the first day back, give yourself a little extra time and avoid the snooze button. Snoozing will just make you sleepier and everyone will be rushed and stressed. That’s no way to end the holiday.

With all that in mind, I’m off to finish all those loads of laundry that have been piling up. Now that it’s 2010, I’m hoping someone will invent “self-washing, drying, folding and putting away” clothes. Seems like a good idea to me. Anyone?
